Awesome you have a mini-farm too! I grow about 80% of our fruit and vegetables. I buy potatoes, carrots, onions and broccoli because they're cheap and honestly not worth the time and space to grow them with limited land.
Fascinating. I do mean that. Who would have thought manure could do all that! Our daughter had a horse for a few years so I can attest to the hard work it is to shovel and move horse dung. Definitely a work out! I am learning through your posts to see the collaboration and connection between the animals, earth and custodians of the plot of land. Chickens and worms - an industrious combination. Thank you again for another great insight into your world.
Thank you so much for your comment, and for enjoying my little essays so much! I'm very happy they are providing something of value to you. I used to have horses and ponies myself, in quite a big way. I'm quietly considering if we can fit some ponies back into our lives. Then the manure will be even closer! On another note, how is your writing workshop going?
It ended on Wednesday after an intense, but fun and informative 10 weeks. It feels odd to be finished but I do need a break. Reading 7 Jane Austen novels plus background reading was full on.
Yes and they're not tiny little novels either! I'm glad you enjoyed it, makes me want to read some Austen again myself. Did you find any specific background reading particularly helpful?
The tutor gave us texts each week that were from experts in the field but also suggested some books. One of them was by the father of a girl I went to high school with. I knew he was a Professor at ANU but not his area - it was British history and Jane Austen. What a small world - of all the people, I knew this man and now 30 plus years later I am learning from his expertise. It really was an eye opening, thought provoking course.
I grow 80% of my food on my mini farm and all the fertility comes from the chicken coop, compost and seaweed :) Great Article :)

I grow those because they are so good fresh out of the ground!!
I do grow carrots each year coz they're so delicious but I don't grow enough for our full consumption needs. We eat a lot of carrots!

Oh I do love it when the world gets smaller with little interactions like meeting someone you knew from another time in life!
